PARROTS OF PARROTS WORLD

PARROTS OF PARROTS WORLD

Who are the Parrots World parrots*? They are those found mainly in tropical and subtropical areas of the world, such as Latin America, India, Southeast Asia, Africa and Oceania.

Colorful and fascinating, the parrots of Parrots World can be admired up close, during two daily insights full of emotion, of the Flight of the Rainbow. The specimens present act as ambassadors of important messages of conservation of a very threatened ecosystem such as the tropical forest.

The parrots present in Oltremare belong to the families of the Psittacidae (Psittacidae Illiger, 1811) of the order Psittaciformes and the Cacatuidae.
Most Parrots World parrots are 80–90 cm long. Their plumage colors are spectacular.

Their main characteristics are:

  • the curved beak, similar to that of birds of prey, but specialized in opening woody fruits or seeds;
  • the upper jaw is not fused with the skull and therefore allows for greater movement with the beak and head;
  • the number of toes on their paws, four, arranged in opposite pairs (they are zygodactyl).

Among the most well-known parrots are the Macaws. They feed mainly on fruit and seeds. Their beak is very strong and robust, so much so that it allows them to easily open even the hardest shells, such as those of the Brazil nut; after opening the outer layer, they calmly enjoy the inside, also helping themselves with their multifunctional legs.

They are very skilled at flying, but they are equally skilled at climbing! Using their strong beaks as an additional grip, they can easily move between branches and climb to the highest and safest areas in the trees.

Common name: GREEN-WINGED MATTHA
Scientific name: Ara chloroptera
Length: 80- 95 cm
Weight: 900 - 1400 g
Wingspan: 100 - 120 cm
The Ara chloroptera is present in Central America and South America. It lives in tropical lowland and hill forests, in the Amazon rainforest and in wooded savannahs up to a maximum of 1400m in Venezuela. It feeds on nuts, seeds, fruits, flowers and palm shoots and lives on average up to 50 - 60 years.
Unfortunately, the Ara chloroptera has been affected by the wild deforestation of the rainforests of South America, which is compounded by the illegal trafficking of specimens intended for private individuals. Its population density is now so reduced that CITES has banned its commercial trafficking, allowing only exchanges between scientific bodies, Zoological Gardens, Aquatic Parks and Zooparks, as part of repopulation projects, while the IUCN is responsible for the annual monitoring of the population in nature and intervenes with protection programs.

Common name: BLUE AND YELLOW MACAW
Scientific name: Ara ararauna
Length: 75 - 85 cm
Weight: 850 - 1200 g
Wingspan: 80 - 100 cm
The Blue-and-yellow Macaw is present in eastern Panama, Colombia, eastern Ecuador, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, Bolivia, Peru, Brazil and northeastern Paraguay. It lives in primary forests and gallery forests, savannas (where large trees are present), forests of palms of the genus Mauritia and dry forests. It feeds on palm nuts, nuts, seeds, fruits, flowers and palm shoots and lives on average more than 50 years. A gregarious and social animal, it lives in pairs and in groups of 20-30 individuals. The nest is built in the hollow of a tree, especially dead palms of the genus Mauritia .
Along the rivers it often tends to nibble on clay to obtain mineral salts that are very important for its organism.

Common name: SUN CONURE
Scientific name: Aratinga solstisialis
Length: 30 cm
Weight: 100 - 130 g
Sun conures are native to northeastern Brazil and southern Venezuela, Guyana and Suriname, in the Sipaliwini district. They generally inhabit the northern part of the Amazon River basin.
They like to live in very open forests and palm groves and live in small groups. When two of these parrots join together they do so forever and the female makes her nest in the trunk of a palm tree. The four eggs are incubated for 3 or 4 weeks exclusively by the female with the help of the male.

*The Oltremare parrots are guests of the park from April to September
