THE STURGEON LAKE

A place of peace and relaxation, here lives the 'dinosaur' of the Adriatic

Inside Discovery Delta you can discover very interesting stories. Like that of the Sturgeon, one of the most endangered Italian fish species.
Oltremare and all the Costa Edutainment parks are at the forefront of conservation, awareness and education projects and actions. Among these projects is the one dedicated to the Cobice Sturgeon (Acipenser naccarii).

Adriatic sturgeons have a very ancient history. Their most ancient ancestor, Piscosturion , was contemporary with Tyrannosaurus rex, and lived in the Late Cretaceous. In recent centuries, sturgeons have always lived in rivers and on the coasts of countries bordering the Mediterranean.

This is an anadromous species, meaning it lives most of the time in salt water but reproduces in fresh water. Adults can reach two meters in length and weigh up to 80 kg. They have a long life, they can live up to 80 years. They reach sexual maturity between 5 and 16 years (20 and 30 kg in weight) and, while males can reproduce every year, females have reproduction intervals of 2 or 3 years, producing up to a million eggs. Of placid nature, they feed on crustaceans and insects and adults also on small fish.
