Where are Transvaal Caves?

Located about 50 kilometers northwest of Johannesburg, South Africa, caves such as Sterkfontein and Swartkrans have yielded unique discoveries. Thanks to the work of pioneers such as Robert Broom and Raymond Dart, we have been able to reconstruct part of our evolutionary history.

Sterkfontein Cave is one of the most famous and has given the world iconic fossils such as Mrs. Ples, a nearly complete skull of Australopithecus africanus .

Swartkrans Cave is known for its fossils of Paranthropus robustus, which had a massive jaw and teeth suited to a vegetarian diet.
