NORBERT CASTERET

The Father of Speleology
Norbert Casteret

Speleos' journey passes through cave routes, inspired by the real ones discovered by Norbert Casteret, one of the founding fathers of speleology. His passion for underground exploration, combined with a remarkable narrative ability, made him one of the most famous speleologists of all time.

Who was Casteret?
A lawyer with a passion for the underground: Casteret devoted much of his free time to exploring caves. Throughout his life he was a prolific explorer, discovering thousands of caves throughout Europe, new cavities and drawing detailed maps. Casteret was also a great communicator: his ability to describe his adventures in a compelling way made him a successful author. His books, such as "Thirty Years Under the Ground", have inspired generations of speleologists, debunking many myths and prejudices.

Why is he considered the father of speleology?
Casteret made speleology accessible to a wider audience through his books and lectures. He introduced a more scientific approach to cave exploration, documenting his discoveries and producing detailed maps. And thanks to his work, speleology became an internationally recognized discipline.

His greatest achievements
In 1923, Casteret discovered some of the oldest known sculptures in the Montespan cave in the Pyrenees. Then, at nearly 60 years of age, he led an international expedition to explore the depths of the Pierre Saint Martin, one of the deepest caves in Europe at the time.

The Legacy of Casteret
Norbert Casteret's legacy lives on today. Thanks to him, speleology has become a fascinating discipline accessible to all. His books continue to inspire new generations of explorers, and his discoveries continue to be studied by scientists.

Live an unforgettable experience, exploring the caves and becoming, for a day, a hero like Casteret!
